To create an opportunity for Floridians to ask local and statewide candidates for the 2018 mid-term elections what they propose to do to address flooding, sea level rise, and related issues. We strive to encourage public education, dialogue, debate, and solutions.
Our goal is to enlighten and enable elected officials to implement widespread solutions to sea level rise. By working together, we can develop smart solutions to protect against this ever-growing problem.
There is an increasing awareness of the challenges of sea level rise and flooding. Local officials have the ability to take actions that can not only minimize flooding before it happens but can actually lower the cost of flood insurance. Proper protection against flooding and natural disasters that result from sea level rise requires action on an individual, municipal, and national level. Studies show that strengthening communities before disaster strikes costs less than repairing afterward. Every $1 spent on mitigation for flooding results in $7 of savings.
Vulnerable communities need to rebuild stronger than they were, so they don’t face the same outcome when disastrous events happen again. Developing smarter infrastructure that will withstand expected changes and strengthening building codes will help communities thrive under changing circumstances.
Flooding due to sea level rise is a big challenge, but there are solutions to keep our coastal communities safer. Flooding does not have to be a way of life for coastal communities.
